Hy!

I'm developing an AR-based project using GART as a university homework, and I stumbled upon a problem with the heading indicator. The rotation of the heading indicator is really lagging on both my test devices: a Nokia Lumia 710 (running WP7) and a Nokia Lumia 620 (running WP8). My project is a WP7.1 project to maintain compatibility, and for now I only implemented something really similar to the sample project "SimpleAR" (an ARDisplay with map and random locations, and a toggle between map view and 3d view).

I tried the version in the commit 72339 and it works perfectly without any lagg, so it seems, the problem is only in the latest commit.

I hope you'll find the culprit soon, as I noticed that the latest commit fixed some other issues so I think it would be better to use that in my project as well. Thanks in advance!

Hi!

Yes, after calibrating, and the 100 millisec set, the SampleAR working fine. But now I think I misunderstand the meaning of compass calibartion. I did the same with Jack of Tools Pro, and then the compass worked. Back in the SampleAR app it wasn't working. So every time someone uses the application for the first time, he/she needs to calibrate the compass FOR the application?

Than I think I must put up a sign to my future users about this. But I think the "shape 8" static image isn't the best as in for example Jack of Tools. Or at least at first I needed to watch a similar video that you linked now to get it calibrated. Maybe could you suggest a better How-to picture or animation? I'm not too good in animation so I think I can't put together one that mimics truly the movement in the video.

Edit: The SampleAR works fine after calibration, but somehow I can't get it calibrated in my App. :(

That looks like compass needs calibrating, as you are not getting any sensible readings.

Also I made another video, showing the same app on the same phone, but with TimeBetweenUpdates set to 100. Less lagg (still noticable), but now the heading indicator wobbles, even when the phone is idle, and still turns in the wrong direction (although that's a separate problem I fear).

If I decrease the time, the lag becomes even less, but it wobbles more.

Hi!

I uploaded a short video to Youtube to demonstrate the problem. In the video I run the SimpleAR example app of the latest commit on a Nokia Lumia 710 (Windows Phone 7.8), and set the TimeBetweenUpdates to 500 milliseconds.

As it can be seen the heading indicator not only lags, but turns in the wrong direction. I didn't noticed that earlier, and it only turns in the wrong direction when the heading indicator is fixed and the map turns. And I'm also seeing this on the Lumia 620 (running WP 8).

And I also checked the compass in Jack of Tools and it runs normally, without any lag and turns in the right direction.

In some scenarios a configurable far clipping plan would be better solution than an arbitrary one. What about adding a configurable property describing the search radius?

Replacing the following code in WorldView.OnAttitudeChanged() method :

double scale = (FarClippingPlane - Math.Abs(arItem.WorldLocation.Z)) / FarClippingPlane;

with this one, should fix the problem:

double scale = (double)(MathHelper.Lerp(0.1f, 1.0f, (FarClippingPlane - Math.Abs(arItem.WorldLocation.Z)) / FarClippingPlane));

Alternatively, scale range could be set by class properties.

i'm trying to use gart in wp8 project. inspite of adding gart dll it still gives me a build error The type or namespace name 'GART' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Is gart still not ported for wp8?

Maybe worth to note that in the current version (and since commit 72294) the ARDisplay.HandleOrientationChange method only needs the OrientationChangedEventArgs itself as parameter. So now the method call looks like this:

ARDisplay.HandleOrientationChange(e);

Hi,

I managed to run some tests, and there is noticeable difference in response between commits.
You can either wait for the fix (do you have any hard deadlines on your project?), or provisionally put fix in your local code.

Go to ARDisplay.cs file and find the following code:

compass = new Compass();
compass.TimeBetweenUpdates = TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(500);
compass.CurrentValueChanged += compass_CurrentValueChanged;
}
```

Now, change TimeBetweenUpdates from 0.5seconds to something more suitable (tested with 100 milliseconds and seems to be way better, but still slower than the previous version).

The fix will introduce a public property, do a developer will have full control.

It's not seconds, just when I turn the phone, the heading indicator doesn't turn continously, but jumps between positions. I mainly use the AR view in landscape mode but I tried, and the same lag happened in portrait as well.

I'm sorry, but what is the checkout area, and why do you ask that question?

I'll check the other things you asked tomorrow.

Hi,
Thanks for reporting this issue.

The difference between commit 72339 and the latest one is that we switched to use compass as the reading source for heading indicator. This was down to the fact, that w/o compass, the reading were difficult to interpret if in landscape mode.

Now, I haven't seen any noticeable performance differences, but I'll have look at this shortly.

In meantime, a few questions:
- what's the lag in terms of seconds?
- can you use a separate compass app (I use free version of Jack of Tools) and see if a) you compass need calibration (unlikely that this is happening on two different devices), and b) can you observe similar log in terms of compass responsiveness?
- are the heading indication are actually correct?
- (unrelated) how many Visual Studio solution files can you see in your check out area?

Hi,

The heading indicator does not have the option of showing points of interest in the same manner as nokia's CITY/HERE LENS.
You could create something similar with GART using the following method:

place bing map item int the corner of your screen
populate bing map with pushpins using your collection of items. Instead of a regular pushping object you can use something like ellipsis (see: http://winsource.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/pinbucket.png).
overlay HeadIndicator of top of bing map - maintaining the same size and location.
